Five reasons pocket RPGs finally got good

Five reasons pocket RPGs finally got good

August 13, 2026 · Lukas Bergström

For years, RPGs on phones meant auto-battlers and stamina bars. You tapped a button and watched numbers happen. It was fine on a train, but it wasn't playing.

That's shifted. Games like Ashvale Chronicle put actual tactical combat in your hand, with timelines and positioning you have to think about. The turn-based format turns out to be perfect for a device you play in bursts — you can pause forever mid-decision.

The other big change is respect for your time. Good mobile RPGs now let you skip the grind, save state constantly, and drop in for five minutes without losing your thread. The best of them treat short sessions as a feature to design around, not a limitation to fight.

If you wrote off the genre on phones a few years ago, it's worth another look. Start with something story-first and turn-based, and you'll see how far things have come.
