Why we keep chasing tiny studios

Why we keep chasing tiny studios

June 17, 2026 · Lukas Bergström

Big publishers make polished games. Small ones make surprising ones. That trade-off is why Photon Kit leans indie so hard.

When five people build something, their taste survives into the final product. You get the odd art style, the joke that only makes sense to them, the mechanic nobody in a boardroom would have signed off on. Lantern Hollow feels made by specific humans, and that's exactly its charm.

The risk is rough edges — a bug here, a menu there. We flag those honestly. But a game with heart and a few flaws beats a flawless one with nothing to say, at least around here.

We follow small studios not out of charity but self-interest. That's simply where the interesting stuff keeps coming from.
